“In deciding what type of portable solar/battery generators to use in a preparedness situation, our family has considered both Lead-Acid and Lithium solar battery systems. This review is based on what we consider important advantages and disadvantages.”

WE HAVE FOUND THAT LITHIUM BATTERY TECHNOLOGY HAS SOME VERY SIGNIFICANT ADVANTAGES, SUCH AS:

  • 1. SYSTEM WEIGHT. The Lion Energy 1500 Lithium system weighs about 34 pounds while the comparable Goal Zero Lead-Acid system weighs about 100 pounds. For portability and weight the Lithium system has a real advantage.
  • 2. LIFE CYCLES AND RECHARGE TIME. Lithium batteries have life cycles in the 1,000’s, while Lead-Acid batteries have life cycles in the 100’s. Also, Lithium systems have a faster recharge time.
  • 3. MAINTENANCE. Lead-Acid batteries should not be discharged below 50% to maintain the life cycles and should be charged every three months or so to maintain the battery integrity. Lithium batteries do not have these restrictions, you can charge the Lithium battery and put it away for a year or more and it will maintain the charge.

The disadvantage of lithium systems is that they usually cost more that Lead-Acid systems. However, lithium systems have dropped in price and considering the distinct advantages, lithium systems are becoming price competitive.
